WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

According to the manufacturer, a single JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes. Nicotine can harm the developing adolescent brain, and the brain keeps developing until about age 25! Learn more by visiting the links below.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND DANGERS?

The following programs are preventative education resources aimed to help our youth better understand the science and health risks associated with vaping and use of e-cigarettes. These resources include information on the important distinction between tobacco use and nicotine use in e-cigarettes.

Aspire, A Smoking Prevention Interactive Experience (MD Anderson Cancer Center) 6 Session Course

  • Free, bilingual, online curriculum that helps middle and high school teens learn to be tobacco free while explaining the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use.
  • Users complete quiz at the end of each module. Teachers can access student progress. 

Catch My Breath (University of Texas) Ages 10-18

  • Designed to be taught by teachers, tobacco prevention educators, counselors, nurses, and other public health advocates. The curriculum can be taught in various in-school subjects and youth-based organizations. 
  • Includes active student-centered learning facilitated by peer leaders
  • Required facilitator training through website

Know the Risks (CDC) Ages 11-18, one 45 minute session

  • Designed for any adult working with youth (teachers, coaches, club advisors)

Stanford University School of Medicine Tobacco Toolkit

  • Designed for use with young people in variety of settings – K-12 schools, community based organizations and health related agencies 

The Real Cost of Vaping (Scholastic and FDA) 

  • Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12 versions, 3 lessons

The Denoble Files

  • Animated Youtube series on the dangers and impact of vaping created by former tobacco scientist, Dr. Victor Denoble.

My Life, My Quit - Free resources to help eligible residents quit smoking or using other tobacco products.

Teen Smoke Free - Get help with the unique challenges that teens have when quitting smoking or vaping. Find information and tools designed to help you stop for good.

This is Quitting (The Truth Initiative’s Quitting App) - This is Quitting is a free mobile program from Truth Initiative designed to help young people quit vaping. The first-of-its-kind text messaging program incorporates messages from other young people like them who have attempted to, or successfully quit, e-cigarettes.

Not on Tobacco (N-O-T) Youth Cessation Program - N-O-T was designed for teens ages 14 to 19 and addresses issues important to them. Each session using a holistic approach and different interactive learning strategies that can then be applied and practiced in everyday life and encourages a voluntary change.

Rushford Academy - Offers State-approved, private, special education services for teens receiving treatment at Rushford at Stonegate and Rushford Academy, as well as for high school students referred by their local school districts, call 860-349-2043.
